Osteopathy and Osteopathic Treatment

The Bower Mount Clinic

Located in Maidstone, Kent, The Bower Mount Clinic is home to a skilled team of osteopaths specialising in evidence-based assessment, diagnosis, and management of a wide range of musculo-skeletal conditions like back pain, neck pain, arthritis, headaches, hip, knee and shoulder pain, elbow and wrist pain and sports injuries. Osteopathy focuses on the connection between the body’s structure and function, aiming to restore balance and promote overall well-being.

What to Expect at Your First Osteopathic Appointment

At The Bower Mount Clinic, we practice a patient-centred approach to healthcare. Here’s what you can expect during your initial osteopathy appointment:

  • Duration: Your first session will typically last between 30-45 minutes.
  • Initial Consultation: Your osteopath will ask about your current issue, overall health, medications, and other treatments. All information is strictly confidential.
  • Clinical Examination:
    • A thorough examination will focus on the problem area and assess the overall function of your body.
    • You may be asked to perform simple movements to assess posture and mobility.
    • If needed, your osteopath may request you to remove some clothing, but gowns are available if you prefer. You’re welcome to bring a friend or relative for support.
  • Diagnosis and Treatment Plan: Your osteopath will explain their findings, discuss a tailored treatment plan, and outline the expected benefits and potential risks.

What Does Treatment Involve?

Treatment includes hands-on techniques such as:

  • Gentle manipulation and mobilisation of the spine and and other joints.
  • Massage of soft tissues to reduce tension and spasm.
  • Cranial Osteopathy, which uses light pressure on the head and spine, helping many patients feel deeply relaxed (some even fall asleep!).

Your osteopath will ensure you understand the treatment and seek your consent before proceeding. They may also recommend exercises or self-care tips to assist your recovery.

After Treatment – What to Expect

  • Many patients experience immediate relief, while some may feel mild soreness for up to 24 hours as the body adjusts.
  • Your osteopath will explain possible reactions and advise on managing any discomfort, such as using cold packs.
  • If you have concerns after your treatment, contact the clinic for advice.

Insurance and Referrals

  • Private Health Insurance: Many private insurers cover osteopathic treatment. Check with your provider regarding your coverage and any referral requirements.
  • GP Referral: While most patients self-refer, we encourage keeping your GP informed to ensure coordinated care. Your osteopath can provide reports for your GP, employer, or insurance needs upon request.

Why Choose The Bower Mount Clinic?

Our osteopaths treat the whole person rather than just the symptoms. This approach includes:

  • Medical Screening: Identifying underlying causes of pain or dysfunction.
  • Holistic Assessment: Evaluating your body’s structural and functional balance for effective treatment.

Is Referral from a Doctor necessary?

Most patients ‘self-refer’ to an osteopath for treatment. Although referral by a GP is not necessary, you are encouraged to keep your GP fully informed, so that your medical records are current and complete. This will ensure you receive the best possible care from both health professionals. If you wish, your osteopath can send a report to your GP with details of your condition and treatment. You can also request a letter for your employer if this is helpful and we can provide recognised sick notes where appropriate.

Our Practitioners

Osteopaths at The Bower Mount Clinic are trained to treat their patients as a “whole” rather than just focusing on a specific symptom or pain. So when our patients present with any particular problem they are given an overall basic medical screening as well as a structural and functional assessment of how their body is working. This means that the osteopath can discover the underlying cause of a particular problem so that it can be more effectively dealt with. Click here to meet the Osteopath team.
